Pajama Game was my graduation project for my MFA in UC Irvine for Sound Design. Since I was also writing a thesis on Immersive Audio in the meantime, I took the opportunity to incorporate a Timax Soundhub engine into the production.
The Timax helped achieve two main goals - vocal realism and musical panorama. The orchestra was mixed to have a very wide spread across the system to help amplify the music with additional width and detail, without sounding harsh and having an amplified, speaker-y sound. Vocal microphones were programmed to reflect the cast positions and movements onstage as well as when there were scenes in the auditorium seats. The realism of hearing the voices coming from where the cast were located helped audiences to engage with the story rather than be distracted by the disconnect of aural-visual-synthesis. |
