The highlight of this play was the use of metal fences in the sound design. Sennheiser MKE2s SK50 transmitters were attached to the bottom of the fences to capture the rattling and clanging sounds produced by the fences as the cast struck them. These sounds were then processed through a reverb unit and played over other sound effects that we had prepared. Not only did this add a live element to the sound design, it gave audiences the sensation of feeling trapped as the sounds produced by the fences were enhanced in real-time.
Rattling of fences. This is layered on top of the sound of the live fences when the women are hitting them after they are first thrown into their cells.
Fence sliding. This was layered on top of the live sound of fences each time a fence that symbolised a prison door was opened or closed. This was a very tight visual cue following the casts' actions but it greatly heightened the feeling of being trapped.
